Each year, approximately 1/3 of all adults aged 65 and older will experience a fall. Of these falls, 10 – 25 percent results in an injury. Moreover, approximately 10,000 older Americans die in falls every year. It is the 5th leading cause of death for the 70+ age group, with falls accounting for 2/3 of all accidental deaths for this group. Preventing falls involves making effective preparations, choosing the right equipment, and using appropriate techniques. The nature of health care organizations makes them especially vulnerable to patient or resident falls. Because of this, it’s critical to have a well-crafted prevention program.
To help you do this, in this video, we’ll be discussing the following topics:
· The importance and scope of patient falls
· Joint Commission expectations related to falls
· Planning and developing a Fall Prevention Program
· And, Fall Prevention Program components
