Use of Technology in Hand-off Communications

Featured speaker:  Jackie Edmonson, Acting Vice President of Patient Services, Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center, Joliet, IL

In 2004, Provena Saint Joseph implemented hand-off communication technology to manage hand-offs hospital-wide.  The technology facilitates the delivery of hand-off reports by telephone, following voice prompts customized to the SBAR technique.  The system also includes management tools to ensure compliance with hand-off standards.  Provena has received several industry recognitions for its efforts including Modern Healthcare’s Spirit of Excellence Award for quality and Health Data Management’s Nursing IT Innovation Award.

The results Provena has experienced include:

  • Improved quality of communication between caregivers
  • Reduced errors in patient reporting at hand-off
  • Reduced hand-off time from 6 to less than 2 minutes per nurse/per patient
  • Allowed more time for direct patient care
  • Expedited patient throughput by eliminating phone tag during transfers
  • Implemented web-based management tool to monitor hand-offs for quality
