Program Summary
The purpose of this symposium is to foster and enhance an Inter-disciplinary approach to perioperative care leading to improved communication and teamwork among leadership, staff and patients within the perioperative environment including the preoperative area, the OR and the postoperative care area.  Joint Commission Resources (JCR) recognized the need to examine the myriad issues surrounding the care of surgical patients and identified solutions and best practices from across the spectrum of organizations, representing a true cross section of providers. JCR gathered the support of the Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety to create a symposium that both addresses issues and promotes solutions in interdisciplinary fashion. The conference content and format juxtapose plenary sessions covering broad topics such as the state of perioperative safety  and communication issues with track sessions that investigate more focused topics such as sterilization, surgical fires and anesthesia awareness presented by practitioners-leaders in their disciplines- who provide the most current information while outlining the change process to help you achieve successful outcomes. Only through listening, thinking, and problem solving collaboratively can the organizational environment and culture change to deliver better and safer patient care.
