My husband is a video game fanatic. The other day, the sequel to his favorite video game was released, and the game store opened at midnight in order to give customers a chance to pick up their copies. It was something interesting to see. The store opened and while the employees might not have been excited to be working at midnight, the company made it worth their while. The store had a full-blown party. There was pizza, soda, snacks, music, games, and so on. It was a celebration that the employees seemed excited to be a part of.
These are tough economic times. Employees are dealing with cutbacks on salaries, perks, and the like. It’s difficult, and it doesn’t seem to be getting better any time soon. Small tokens of appreciation can go a long way to improve performance and morale. These tokens need not be costly. They could come in the form of free coffee in the morning, a short break in the afternoon, or even a message of a job well done.
What are some things you do in your organizations to show your employees your appreciation? How do you improve performance and morale?

I used the theme of Stephen Lundgrin, PhD's "Fish" and started "Project Fish". We live on the Eastern Shore of Md. and since our community is based on Seafood harvesting, this was a good thing and showed great results. The leaders used their performance indicators as bait and tried to catch a big fish (quality percentage increases) and the higher their scores in producing this, the bigger the chances for winning a bigger fish. They could add extra bait and enter into larger fish categories for bigger prizes if they went an extra step in doing a project that revealed quality improvement. It was amazing how this increased morale and believe me we needed it!
