By Linda Headrick, M.D. and Gregory S. Ogrinc, M.D.

Spurred on by the recommendations from the IOM report, "Crossing the Quality Chasm," medical education regulatory organizations have added teaching quality improvement (QI) recommendations and requirements for training. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education now requires that all resident physicians acquire competence in QI before completing residency training. The Association of American Medical Colleges--the organization that represents all 126 medical schools in the United States--also recommends that students acquire the basic skills to improve care for populations of patients.

  • To meet the needs of beginners in health care QI, Fundamentals of Health Care Improvement will:
  • Explain the theory, principles, and methods of quality improvement
  • Provide opportunities for readers to apply quality improvement in a developmentally appropriate manner
  • Teach readers to analyze and measure systems of care and recommend system-level changes
  • Prepare readers to be advanced beginners in these domains so that they are ready to further develop these skills
