When the earthquake struck Haiti,
Ted Tully had just begun his new position as the Administrative Director for Emergency Preparedness at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, NY.  Dr. Ernest Benjamin, a critical care physician at Mount Sinai and a Haitian, was approached by the Partners in Health organization for assistance.  He and several other physicians quickly arrived in Haiti, while Marianne Coughlin, Vice President of Operations at Mount Sinai, stayed behind to organize a larger-scale relief mission based on Dr. Benjamin’s assessment.

A team of 29 surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, pediatricians, OR technicians, and logistical support from Mount Sinai and other hospitals then flew to Haiti with 3,500 lbs of surgical supplies. There, they found a chaotic scene of primitive amputations followed by infection.  Mr. Tully led the on-the-ground team as they set up three OR suites and, together with other U.S. and International teams, organized surgical systems, spent eight days delivering quality medical care, and left behind a well-organized hospital system.

Come hear their incredible story as Mr. Tulley and Ms. Coughlin share their lessons learned about planning, coordination, and support under the most extreme circumstances.
