Emergency Preparedness Post Conference - April 16, 2009 - The Joint Commission Emergency Management Standards
“Chapter Reorganization for Ease and Use”
This post-conference provides you with The Joint Commission 2009 Emergency Management Standards chapter and the knowledge to build the organizational resilience required to plan for, respond to, and recover from emergencies in your environment. These standards go into effect on January 1, 2009 and are part of The Joint Commission’s Standards Improvement Initiative (SII) to enhance the clarity and objectivity of the standards. The overall intent behind the 2009 EM chapter is to shift organizations’ focus from planning for specific emergencies to taking an all-hazards approach. These standards will encourage organizations to use a “scalable” approach to EM, which can enable them to manage a variety of disasters even if the disasters escalate in intensity, complexity, scope, or duration.
Objectives
Implement an emergency preparedness process that is organization wide and collaborative, drawing upon the knowledge, skills, and resources of all areas of the organization as well as essential partners in the community.
Create an all hazards emergency operations plan (EOP) that is scalable, supporting planning and response to emergencies within the organization as well as prolonged disasters across the community or region
Utilize The Joint Commission 2009 standards like a checklist for EM, with clearer expectations for six critical functions - communications, resources and assets, safety and security, staffing, utilities, and patient care - and exercise requirements designed to test, stress, and improve the organization’s response to emergencies..
Target Audience
Health care professionals that implement The Joint Commission 2009 standards such as emergency room directors, medical and nursing staff, safety officers, risk managers. This program is geared to those that are new or entry level professionals who plan emergency preparedness for their health care organizations and or those experienced in emergency planning that need to make action plans for changes in their emergency operation plans. It is designed primarily to provide an overview of The Joint Commission 2009 Emergency Management Standards which emphasize the clarity and objectivity of the standards to evaluate hospital emergency preparedness.
