Claudette Dalton, MD

Claudette Dalton spent 17 years on the faculty of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, her alma mater, before retiring in 2006. She served as Assistant Dean for Community Based Medical Education from 1989 until July 2006, and developed and directed a model preceptorship program for the multiple courses where medical students learn from doctors in their private practices.
Her anesthesiology and internal medicine training prepared her for her UVA clinical role as Medical Director of the Pre-anesthesiology Evaluation and Testing Center. Upon her retirement from UVA, she moved to a full-time clinical role at Rockingham Memorial Hospital (RMH) as Medical Director for Surgical and Academic Programs. In that role, she oversaw all aspects of surgery in the 250-bed facility with emphases on surgical quality improvement initiatives, developing a pre-operative testing center, the design and construction of the surgical suites for a new hospital and the start-ups of new cardiac and bariatric surgery service lines.
She also worked as a consultant on the Surgical Care Improvement Project for the Virginia Health Quality Center, Virginia’s QIO, and after leaving RMH, she consulted for a time on surgical efficiency and productivity, including adding OPPE measures to surgeon contracts and credentialing.
Dr. Dalton has expertise in perioperative medicine, pain issues, medication safety, infection control, quality improvement and leadership issues. She is also very well versed in issues related to cultural/language and other communication services.
Dr. Dalton served as an elected member of the AMA’s Council on Medical Education and its chair in 2008-09, on the Board of Directors of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) two terms on the NBME Medical School Advisory Committee. She is currently serving on the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) board.
She is in her second term on the Virginia Board of Medicine Currently, she is Vice-President of the Board, and chairs the Legislative Committee and a new Committee on Competency and Re-licensure. She has also served on the Federation of State Medical Board’s Advisory Committee on Maintenance of Licensure (2009-2010) and now serves on the FSMB’s Special Committee on Reentry.
Dr. Dalton has kept up a career-long interest in health literacy and lectures nationally on the topic. She has also published and presented on the topic of Tight Glycemic Control. She has recently coauthored several publications on Reentry.
Dr. Dalton received her BA at Sweet Briar College in 1969, her MD from the University of Virginia in 1974 and completed her residency in Anesthesiology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1977.
She is active in the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists, the AMA and the Medical Society of Virginia.
