Hahnemann University Hospital is one of the four demonstration sites working on the prevention of pressure ulcer project with the Nurse Safety Scholar-in-Residence.
Hahnemann University Hospital is a 540-bed tertiary care adult academic medical center and Level – One trauma center with a long and rich history of serving the Philadelphia region. Located in the Center City section of Philadelphia, Hahnemann’s emergency department treats more than 35,000 patients each year. The hospital consistently ranks above the national, state and county averages on quality indicators used for measuring clinical core performance in hospitals as reported by Centers of Medicare and Medicaid (CMS). In 2007, Hahnemann was recognized by US News and World Report as one of the nation’s leading hospitals for heart care. In 2009, Hahnemann earned Magnet® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®. Hahnemann is also recognized by the American Heart Association as a leader in coronary artery disease and heart failure treatments and is the recipient of the Joint Commission’s “Gold Seal of Approval for Primary Stroke Centers.”
By participating in the Nurse Safety Scholar-in-Residence, Hahnemann seeks to decrease the incidence of hospital acquired pressure ulcers. Currently the Hahnemann team is evaluating Save Our Skin, its own evidence-based protocols, for pressure ulcer prevention. This reassessment includes identifying the perceived barriers to successful implementation of the Save Our Skin program, surveying the Department of Nursing with regards to the Save Our Skin Program, and surveying physicians to understand their perceived role in preventing pressure ulcers. Once the information has been gathered, Hahnemann will update its protocols and re-educate staff.
