Highlights of the 2009 NPSGs

Summary of Changes to the National Patient Safety Goals

 

• The numbering convention for all National Patient Safety Goal requirements has been changed

 

• The "Implementation Expectations" for all National Patient Safety Goal requirements are now called "Elements of Performance"

 

• New requirements were added to Goal 1, Goal 7, and Goal 8

 

• New elements of performance were added to requirements NPSG.01.01.01, NPSG.13.01.01, NPSG.16.01.01, and UP.01.02.01 and UP.01.02.01

 

• Editorial changes were made to Goal 1, Goal 2,Goal 3, Goal 8, Goal 13, Goal 15, Goal 16, and the Universal Protocol

 

• The elements of performance for NPSG.01.01.01, NPSG.03.05.01, and NPSG.16.01.01 have been renumbered

 

• Goal 12 has been retired

 

• One-year "phase-in" requirements for NPSG.03.05.01 and NPSG.16.01.01 expire December 31, 2008

 

• Applicability changes have been made to requirements for Goal 1, Goal 2, Goal 3, Goal 7, Goal 8, Goal 9, and Goal 10
