Joint Commission Resources (JCR) is proud to launch the 4th Annual Flu Vaccination Challenge, a nationwide program that encourages health care organizations to raise their flu vaccination rates among staff.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), annual flu vaccination is the most effective method for preventing flu virus infection and its complications. Help protect yourself, your coworkers, and your patients by registering for this season’s Challenge at FluVaccinationChallenge.com.

Through The Flu Vaccination Challenge, health care organizations can take advantage of a host of helpful resources to motivate staff to follow CDC guidance and get vaccinated against the flu.

Health care organizations are encouraged to achieve a 75, 85, or 95 percent flu vaccination rate among staff. JCR will recognize organizations that “meet” the Challenge with a Bronze, Silver or Gold Recognition Award, respectively. The average staff vaccination rate among health care organizations that participated in last year’s Flu Vaccination Challenge was 80 percent - a full 16 percentage points higher than the national flu vaccination average among health care workers!* Additional details on last year’s results can be found on the Flu Vaccination Challenge website.

Are you up for the Challenge? To participate in this year’s Flu Vaccination Challenge, health care organizations should visit FluVaccinationChallenge.com. Registration ends on February 28, 2012, and results submission will begin in March. Don’t delay!

For inspiration, here are a few “best practices” from last year’s Challenge to help you increase flu vaccination at your health care organization. • Create mobile “flu carts” to administer the flu vaccine “on the go” • Organize a friendly, department-based competition; offer a prize for the departments with the highest compliance • Set up multiple locations so that everyone can reach the vaccination station
 Check out more best practices!
Help protect yourself and prevent spreading the flu to others by getting vaccinated. According to the CDC, annual flu vaccination is the most effective method for preventing flu virus infection and its complications.

Summer is winding down, and flu season is approaching. And so is the launch of the 3rd annual Flu Vaccination Challenge, a nationwide effort to encourage health care workers to get vaccinated against the flu. Over one thousand health care organizations have participated in the campaign each year. We are thrilled to announce the results from last year’s Challenge: participating health care organizations reached 76 percent vaccination. This is a 13 percent increase from the previous year’s Challenge, and 27 percent above the national average! Over one million health care workers were vaccinated against seasonal flu as part of the Challenge. While the results are impressive, there is still room for improvement. JCR has raised the bar this year, challenging health care organizations to raise their vaccination to 75, 85 or 95 percent among their staff (bronze, silver and gold, respectively). Join this year’s Flu Vaccination Challenge! Flu vaccination can benefit you, your family and your patients – especially those at higher risk for flu complications, such as adults 65 years and older and people with chronic medical conditions. This year’s seasonal flu vaccine also includes the 2009 H1N1 flu strain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), annual flu vaccination is the most effective method for preventing flu virus infection and its complications. False! Historically, the highest incidence of seasonal flu is in February. Please use this and other seasonal flu facts in creative ways to get your staff vaccinated. It’s not too late! Please refer back to our discussion from November about the myths associated with seasonal flu.

It’s officially 2010, and time for all of us to make our New Year’s resolutions for the year. Encourage your staff to put protecting themselves and their patients from seasonal flu at the top of their list. Think of creative ways to get your staff involved and vaccinated. Many of us come back from the holidays refreshed and ready to face new challenges, especially as they relate to self-improvement. January is the perfect time to take advantage of the self-improvement angle to encourage your staff to get vaccinated.

One creative idea you could use would be to make a flyer with a check list on it titled, “My New Year’s Resolutions.” List hand washing regularly, staying home when I’m sick and getting the flu shot on the list. What other ideas can you think of? Are there any themed events you can come up with that would encourage vaccination? Please share your ideas with your fellow Challengers below.

Flu Vaccination Challenge DECEMBER BLOG: HOLIDAY HEADACHES

The holidays are here, and you know what that means: lots of family and friends, eating, gift giving and stress. According to the CDC, public vaccination rates drop off steeply after Thanksgiving because we are all focused on the holidays. Your staff may claim they are too busy to get a seasonal flu vaccination, but this month, it’s more important than ever to encourage them to receive the vaccination to help avoid missed days from work and avoid transmitting the flu to their patients. In my November post, I talked about seasonal flu vaccination as a patient safety issue. This month, I encourage you to inform your staff not to let the seasonal flu take away time that could be spent with family and friends. In addition, December 6-12 is National Influenza Vaccination Week. This week was designated by the CDC to highlight the importance of continuing flu vaccination, as well as foster greater use of flu vaccine through the month of December and beyond. Take advantage of the holidays and National Influenza Vaccination Week as a time to think of creative programs you can do with your staff to get them vaccinated. Have you come up with any fun holiday ideas? Please feel free to share your ideas and questions with your fellow Challengers below. Happy Holidays!
