This web-based training course consists of three individual lessons (see below). Next to each lesson is the approximate completion time. But not to worry….you have 60 days to complete all three lessons, so the lessons do not have to be completed in one sitting.
Lesson 1: Improving Handoff Communication Processes
(45 Minutes)
After completing this lesson, the learner will be able to:

Demonstrate nursing practice behaviors that meet Joint Commission standards for appropriate handoff communication processes to prevent patient harm as a result of communication breakdowns

Report patient information to the receiving health care provider using your facility's standardized process with any of the four main methods of handoff communication

Employ effective handoff communication strageties, such as limiting interruptions and using a checklist, to ensure the continuity of care and safety of the patient

Identify handoff communication errors within the specific examples and scenarios
Lesson 2: Enhancing Handoff Communication and Teamwork
(30 minutes)
After completing this lesson, the learner will be able to:

Process handoff information using strategies for proper communication between nurses and other health care providers to deliver appropriate care to each individual patient

Incorporate mnemonic devices in handoff communication in order to improve the completeness and consistency of information reported

Demonstrate nursing practice behaviors during handoff communication processes that satisfy a Joint Commission surveyor's evaluation
Lesson 3: Using Existing Handoff Strategies Effectively
(45 minutes)
After completing this lesson, the learner will be able to:

Give report for patient handoff using the SBAR technique

List examples of different handoff types where the SBAR technique can be used effectively

Identify components of the SBAR technique and other existing strategies including SEAM, BSAP, SHARED, Passport, I PASS the BATON, and Ticket to Ride
