Ronald H. Small is Chief Pharmacy Officer, and Vice President, Quality, Safety and Service Excellence at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC) in Winston-Salem, NC.  His experience across the continuum of care includes responsibility for pharmacy practices in retail, long term care, home care, physician practices and community health centers. Additional areas of responsibility include Infection Control, Care Coordination Management, Materials Management, Information Services, Respiratory Therapy and the Quality Resource Center.


Mr. Small’s experience spans over 30 years of leadership at WFUBMC, one of the nation's preeminent academic medical centers. Wake Forest is an integrated health care system that operates 1,187 acute care, rehabilitation and long term care beds, outpatient services, and community health and information centers. The Medical Center has 20 subsidiary or affiliate hospitals and conducts 87 satellite clinics throughout the region. It provides a continuum of care that includes primary care centers, outpatient rehabilitation, dialysis centers, home health care, and long-term nursing centers.


Mr. Small pursued a career in health care because it provides an opportunity to perform caring acts by working to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases or conditions that are adversely impacting a person’s well-being. He would like to see quality health care provided to everyone—without barriers—in a manner that is safe, timely, efficient, effective, efficacious and patient-centered.


Mr. Small is Adjunct Professor of Pharmacy Practice with the UNC and Campbell Schools of Pharmacy and Lecturer in Hospital Administration at Wake Forest University. He is also a faculty member of the ASHP Foundation Leadership Academy providing learning experiences for the academy’s participants in areas of executive leadership. He has also contributed to the professional body of knowledge on such topics as quality leadership and quality improvement, antimicrobial utilization management and stewardship, drug cost reduction strategies, CPOE and the use of technologies in the medication use process and quality of care improvement strategies, including the concept of continuity of care. 


Mr. Small earned his degree in pharmacy and an MBA from the University of North Carolina and was honored with a doctor of science degree (Honoris Causa) from Campbell University.  He has a broad scope of experience in Process Management and Quality Improvement and was certified as a Quality Improvement Trainer by The Juran Institute. Further, Mr. Small is a graduate of the Advanced Training Program from the Intermountain Healthcare Institute for Health Care Delivery Research. In addition, he attended the University of Southern California’s School of Pharmacy for certification in pharmacoeconomics. Mr. Small is a Certified Executive Coach by the International Coaching Federation.


He is a member of several professional organizations including: ACHE, NQF, APHA (Fellow), ASHP (Fellow), ASPEN, ACCP and other state and national organizations.
