Michael D. Youssi, MD, MHA

Consultant, Joint Commission Resources, Inc.

Dr. Youssi has been a health care professional for more than 30 years and attributes an inner drive to take care of others as the reason for pursuing a career in health care.  He also credits his childhood family physician for being a good role model, who was a problem solver and taught him how to do everything right the “first time.”

Dr. Youssi serves as Clinical Effectiveness Officer at OSF Healthcare System, a seven-hospital integrated delivery system where he operationalizes the Joint Commission standards as keys to delivering highly reliable care to “every patient, every time.” Before joining Joint Commission Resources, Inc., Dr. Youssi served as Senior Vice President of Clinical Affairs at Ancilla Systems, Inc. where for more than five years he was responsible for inspiring high performance, physician management teams and developing and leading a variety of corporate initiatives across multiple markets. His expertise in clinical value-chain enabling and physician-management integration consulting helps his clients make sense out of challenging realities.

Dr. Youssi’s consulting expertise also includes adoption of technology as a change enabler; management and physician retreat facilitation; physician leadership development and training; sentinel event, root cause analysis and failure mode, effect, and criticality analysis; clinical process redesign; physician compensation, credentialing, and policy development; medical staff infrastructure development (bylaws, rules and regulations, and policies and procedures); approaches to disruptive physician behavior and the abuse-free workplace; and patient safety and medical error reduction.

An instrument-rated private pilot, Dr. Youssi believes today’s hospitals should include “safety programs with outcome levels at that of the airline industry.” He knows there are challenges facing health care, and one change that would change the face of health care for good would be increasing safety. “Safety would trump profit as a strategic imperative for any organization providing health care.”

Dr. Youssi’s experience across the continuum of care reflects a diverse constituency and ranges from the bedside to the board room. He was the Ancilla liaison with the Advisory Board in Washington, DC, and served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of Sagamore Health Network.

He has had faculty appointments at Northwestern University McGaw Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, and University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, Illinois and is licensed to practice medicine in California and Indiana.

Dr. Youssi received his bachelor’s of science in natural sciences from Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio; his master’s of science in health care administration from University of Colorado, Denver, Colorado; and his doctorate of medicine from University of Illinois, College of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois.
