As the patient's role as part of the health care team continues to expand, patient and family involvement is more important than ever to achieve safe and error-free patient care. To encourage this involvement, The Joint Commission created National Patient Safety Goals 7 and 13, requiring organizations to define and to communicate the means for patients and their families to report concerns about safety, including infection control issues. Although organizations can comply with this goal in a number of ways, it is essential that organizations change their cultures so that patient and family involvement becomes common practice in conducting day-to-day operations.
