Dr. George Liesmann is a domestic consultant with Joint Commission Resources. Dr. Liesmann is a Board Certified General Surgeon with 26 years as a physician leader, with more than 14 years as a senior hospital executive.
In his surgical practice, Dr. Liesmann was involved in oncologic surgery and vascular surgery. He became interested in outcomes, and explored early measurement concepts. He began in leadership as Chair of the local hospital quality committee where he engaged in early efforts of quality measurement and improvement. His interest in improving patient care continued when he was elected as Chairman of the Department of Surgery and later as President of the Medical Staff.
In 1995, Dr. Liesmann accepted the offer to become Vice President of Medical Affairs, where he worked full time on quality improvement, patient safety, informatics, physician issues, and culture change as a senior leader on the hospital’s management team. In the time period where he was in the CMO role most all hospitals in the country were migrating to electronic health records. Dr. Liesmann has had leadership roles in four major EHR installations, as well as numerous subsystems. He had responsibility for integrating system technology with work flow and making sure the systems were improving patient safety.
