Emergency Management in Health Care: An All-Hazards Approach, 2nd Edition

Score: 93, 4 stars
Reviewer:  Diane Mayes,  RN, MSN  (James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital)

Description
This publication provides examples of strategies healthcare organizations employ in response to real life emergency and disaster events. It uses a comprehensive and realistic approach to address each standard and element of performance.

Purpose
The purpose is to provide guidance for the planning and development of response activities for emergency and disaster situations using best practice examples from the field. This is a much-needed resource for all healthcare organizations and should be a continued practice as we build on the body of knowledge required to improve planning and response activities over time.

Audience
The audience includes individuals who are responsible for ensuring compliance with all emergency management standards outlined by the Joint Commission. The book is written in easy-to-understand language for both clinical and nonclinical readers. The strength of this book lies in the best practices examples from actual organizations or disaster situations. Although each facility is unique, it is helpful for emergency preparedness coordinators to have access to response plans that worked well or lessons learned from other organizations.

Features
Compared to the 2008 first edition, this update seems much more comprehensive. It not only addresses all of the emergency management standards, it also includes eye-catching key points, tips, summaries, or examples on practically every page. It also seems easier to read, and most of the examples and suggestions are realistic.

Assessment
This update improves upon the 2008 edition and I think it will be embraced by the emergency management community. I found it very relevant to the development of disaster response plans for a healthcare organization.
