JCR Appoints Two New Members to Board of Directors

(Oak Brook, IL) Joint Commission Resources, Inc. (JCR) recently appointed two new members to its board of directors: Mary Kay Plantes, Ph.D., founder/principal, Plantes Company, LLC, La Jolla, California; and Jacob Thomas, M.D., chairman, Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care, Malaysia.

The board works to achieve JCR’s mission to improve patient safety and quality of health care in the United States and abroad through education, publications, and consultation and evaluation services. JCR is a nonprofit affiliate and the official publisher and educator of The Joint Commission.

At Plantes Company, LLC, Dr. Plantes works with clients across industry and economic sectors to provide strategic consulting. She helps clients clarify strategic issues, surface fresh market insights and evolve their business models. Dr. Plantes has broad global health care experience including with payers, medical products, drug development, community health care systems, patient safety and the use of advanced analytics to improve health care value.

Dr. Plantes also worked as a senior managing consultant at IBM. She received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, and her Ph.D. in Economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Dr. Thomas helps oversee three hospitals and a health care college in Malaysia, as well as three hospitals in Indonesia as part of Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care. He is currently president of the Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia and was past president of the Asian Hospital Federation from January 2012 to December 2013.

As a recognized health care leader in Asia, Dr. Thomas works closely with various government agencies, including the Malaysian Ministry of Health, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of International Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Finance to promote quality health care locally and internationally. In addition, Dr. Thomas is passionate about the health and welfare of the indigenous tribes in remote areas of Malaysia and has championed several initiatives to provide health services to these individuals.

JCR is governed by a 17-member board of directors. Board members include health care professionals, business and health insurance executives, and quality experts from the United States and around the globe.
