John Dingell VA Medical Center

Project RED Success Story

John Dingell VA Medical Center (JDVAMC) exceeded its goal to reduce readmission and length of stay for substance abuse and psychosis patients by at least 15%.

With direction from JCR, the project started with a system redesign, during which the team found it needed to create a new workbook for the patients to guide them through the treatment process. According to QM Coordinator Christine Beard, the team adapted the AHRQ workbook “Taking Care of Myself” for a new workbook to be used throughout the admission and treatment process.

The team sees this sense of ownership together with the improved structure and education as key components of the improvement in length of stay (LOS) and readmission.

As a result of Project RED inspired improvements, the psychosis unit improved LOS from 11.6 to 4.28 and 30-day readmission from 16.99 to 13. Substance abuse improved LOS from 7.14 to 3.5 and 30-day readmission from 16.18 to 9.9.
