Kimberly Mays, JCR Consultant

Minority Nurse, a career resource center and publication, interviewed JCR consultant, Kimberly Mays, RN, MSN, MBA, CJCP, about different communications tools for nurses. These discussions resulted in two blog posts, “SBAR Communications Helps Nurses” and “Do You Know These Nursing Communication Tools.”

In “SBAR Communications Helps Nurses,” Mays outlines the SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation) method of communication, which was first developed by the United States Military. SBAR is a quick and effective way for nurses to provide a patient’s situation, medical background, and an assessment and recommendation on how to proceed to a physician.

“Do You Know These Nursing Communication Tools” covers a wider range of tactics, including bedside reporting, hourly rounds, and walking rounds. Mays discusses the various positive aspects of each method, and describes scenarios in which they are most effective.
