(JCR), today announced it has received the 2014 John A. Benson Jr., MD Professionalism Article Prize from the ABIM Foundation. The honor recognizes articles exploring pressing professionalism challenges facing physicians.

“JCR is pleased to receive the Professionalism Article Prize for the second consecutive year. JQPS is committed to providing health care professionals with the information they need to promote patient safety and quality of care, including those topics related to medical professionalism,” said Catherine C. Hinckley, MA, PhD, executive director, Publications and Education, JCR.

JQPS received the award for its April 2014 article “Instituting a Culture of Professionalism: The Establishment of a Center for Professionalism and Peer Support” by Jo Shapiro, MD, FACS, Anthony Whittemore, MD, FACS and Lawrence C. Tsen, MD. The article highlights the development of the Center for Professionalism and Peer Support (CPPS) at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. The CPPS includesa code of conduct; mandatory educational programs; and a robust reporting, assessment, and management process for handling concerns regarding professionalism lapses.

“We are honored that our article has been recognized by the ABIM Foundation. I am excited about the opportunity to share our work in professionalism and behavioral accountability with colleagues at other healthcare organizations. This work is important on so many levels – for patient safety, quality of care, as well as for physician retention and emotional health,” said Dr. Shapiro, director, CPPS, Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
